This card is a Carte de Visite (CDV) of Paul Morphy. The photograph was taken by Mathew Brady and produced as a CDV for sale by him as well until the purchase of the company by E. Anthony. The photo was taken at the time of the First American Chess Congress in 1857 at Brady's New York studio.

The three stages of Brady Versos are shown above. The early verso dates to the 1850's-1860's. The second verso is for the 1870's and the final verso was in use until the purchase by E. Anthony. Curiously, the stamp on the verso of this card was stamped upside down.
